The Nelson County Education Endowment Fund, Inc. made its first grant awards with the opening of the 2001–2002 school year. Four projects were funded.
By the end of the 2011–2012 school year, 180 grants will have been awarded to enhance the education of the children of Nelson County.
Grants approved for 2011–2012 included the following:
Bloomfield Middle School
www.IXL.com, Awarded $2,250, Grades 6–8
One year subscription to math website “I, myself, will excel in math” – similar to Dreambox Learning, but geared to grades 6–8, for those students who are not proficient in math. Provides system of rewards and enough data to enable teachers to target specific areas of weakness and monitor improvement.
Physics Is Fun, Awarded $795, Grades 6–8
A school assembly program that includes both a presentation and hands-on learning stations for students and parents to actively participate.
Chautauqua Speakers, Awarded $600, Grades 6–8
Two guest speakers, one in the fall semester and one in spring semester, who recreate famous personalities in Kentucky history. Speakers wear authentic costumes and speak about their specific character in that era of history.
Common Core Lit., Awarded $3,714, Grades 6–8
Six-year program providing on-line core content lessons, materials, training and updates for language arts and reading.
Boston School
Carving Success, Awarded $1,300, Grades K-8
School-wide program involving nationally renowned stone sculptor Albert Nelson to create and install a stone trail monument and stone flowers on the Nature Trail. Numerous classroom activities will be oriented around the project prior to the actual carving.
Write About It, Awarded $3,000, Grades K-8
Entire year of reading-writing projects oriented around author George Ella Lyon and her books, culminating in workshops with the author and a community event.
Cox’s Creek Elementary
21st Century Problem-Solving, Awarded $3,000, Grades K-5
Two days of intensive professional training for all K-5 teachers using the new Kentucky Core Standards. Provides strategies and resources for all elementary teachers to use to support active problem-solving for students.
Foster Heights Elementary
Dreambox Learning, Awarded $3,500, Grades K-5
Continuation of online math project currently in place at Foster Heights, which engages students thru a rewards system, encourages students to learn at home, and provides detailed status reports for each student.
Nelson County High School
Band Instruments, Awarded $2,000, Grades 9–12
Purchase, repair of percussion instruments for the band program. These instruments are typically not the type that a student would purchase for at-home use. Instruments owned by the school that need repairs/replacement parts are included.
Visual Arts thru Digital Photos, Awarded $1,000, Grades 10–12
Equipment and supplies for the digital photography classes.
New Haven School
Flocabulary, Awarded $393, Grades 6–8
Classroom materials that help middle school teachers to introduce new vocabulary through the use of “rap” lyrics.
FOSS Hands of Science, Awarded $2,000, Grades K-5
Program includes hands-on science experiments, lesson plans, vocabulary, etc. to increase students’ engagement in science.
Horizons Academy
Academy Character Education, Awarded $500, Grades 9–12
Program designed to promote positive values such as integrity, respect, etc. in at-risk students.
Family Nights , Awarded $750, Grades 9–12
Provide guest speakers, food and materials for evening events designed to get parents involved in their children’s education.
Family Resource Youth Service Center/Boston School & New Haven School
On the Road to Learning, Awarded $3,000, Grades K-5
Continuation of summer program to provide summer educational experiences to students and parents in our most outlying areas of the county. Incorporates nutritional lunches for needy students who are not able to get to the schools that host the federal summer feeding program.
