Grantmaking

The Nelson County Edu­ca­tion Endow­ment Fund, Inc. made its first grant awards with the opening of the 2001–2002 school year.  Four projects were funded.

By the end of the 2011–2012 school year, 180 grants will have been awarded to enhance the edu­ca­tion of the chil­dren of Nelson County.

Grants approved for 2011–2012 included the following:

Bloom­field Middle School

www.IXL.com, Awarded $2,250, Grades 6–8
One year sub­scrip­tion to math web­site “I, myself, will excel in math” – sim­ilar to Dreambox Learning, but geared to grades 6–8, for those stu­dents who are not pro­fi­cient in math.  Pro­vides system of rewards and enough data to enable teachers to target spe­cific areas of weak­ness and mon­itor improvement.

Physics Is Fun, Awarded $795, Grades 6–8
A school assembly pro­gram that includes both a pre­sen­ta­tion and hands-on learning sta­tions for stu­dents and par­ents to actively participate.

Chau­tauqua Speakers, Awarded $600, Grades 6–8
Two guest speakers, one in the fall semester and one in spring semester, who recreate famous per­son­al­i­ties in Ken­tucky his­tory.  Speakers wear authentic cos­tumes and speak about their spe­cific char­acter in that era of history.

Common Core Lit., Awarded $3,714, Grades 6–8
Six-year pro­gram pro­viding on-line core con­tent lessons, mate­rials, training and updates for lan­guage arts and reading.

Boston School

Carving Suc­cess, Awarded $1,300, Grades K-8
School-wide pro­gram involving nation­ally renowned stone sculptor Albert Nelson to create and install a stone trail mon­u­ment and stone flowers on the Nature Trail.  Numerous class­room activ­i­ties will be ori­ented around the project prior to the actual carving.

Write About It, Awarded $3,000, Grades K-8
Entire year of reading-writing projects ori­ented around author George Ella Lyon and her books, cul­mi­nating in work­shops with the author and a com­mu­nity event.

Cox’s Creek Elementary

21st Cen­tury Problem-Solving, Awarded $3,000, Grades K-5
Two days of inten­sive pro­fes­sional training for all K-5 teachers using the new Ken­tucky Core Stan­dards.  Pro­vides strate­gies and resources for all ele­men­tary teachers to use to sup­port active problem-solving for students.

Foster Heights Elementary

Dreambox Learning, Awarded $3,500, Grades K-5
Con­tin­u­a­tion of online math project cur­rently in place at Foster Heights, which engages stu­dents thru a rewards system, encour­ages stu­dents to learn at home, and pro­vides detailed status reports for each student.

Nelson County High School

Band Instru­ments, Awarded $2,000, Grades 9–12
Pur­chase, repair of per­cus­sion instru­ments for the band pro­gram.  These instru­ments are typ­i­cally not the type that a stu­dent would pur­chase for at-home use. Instru­ments owned by the school that need repairs/replacement parts are included.

Visual Arts thru Dig­ital Photos, Awarded $1,000, Grades 10–12
Equip­ment and sup­plies for the dig­ital pho­tog­raphy classes.

New Haven School

Flo­cab­u­lary, Awarded $393, Grades 6–8
Class­room mate­rials that help middle school teachers to intro­duce new vocab­u­lary through the use of “rap” lyrics.

FOSS Hands of Sci­ence, Awarded $2,000, Grades K-5
Pro­gram includes hands-on sci­ence exper­i­ments, lesson plans, vocab­u­lary, etc. to increase stu­dents’ engage­ment in science.

Hori­zons Academy

Academy Char­acter Edu­ca­tion, Awarded $500, Grades 9–12
Pro­gram designed to pro­mote pos­i­tive values such as integrity, respect, etc. in at-risk students.

Family Nights , Awarded $750, Grades 9–12
Pro­vide guest speakers, food and mate­rials for evening events designed to get par­ents involved in their children’s education.

Family Resource Youth Ser­vice Center/Boston School & New Haven School

On the Road to Learning, Awarded $3,000, Grades K-5
Con­tin­u­a­tion of summer pro­gram to pro­vide summer edu­ca­tional expe­ri­ences to stu­dents and par­ents in our most out­lying areas of the county.  Incor­po­rates nutri­tional lunches for needy stu­dents who are not able to get to the schools that host the fed­eral summer feeding program.
