A brief history of the NCEEF

In 1997–98, a cross section of Nelson County parents, leaders, students and educators came together in a series of meetings to develop a strategic plan that would guide the school district into the new century. The creation of an endowment fund was one aspect of that plan.

In 1999, a steering committee of community leaders was convened to discuss the feasibility of establishing a fund. In June 2000, after deliberating for almost a year, the committee created articles of incorporation and bylaws, named a board of directors and founded the Nelson County Educational Endowment Fund, Inc.

The Fund made its first awards to innovative teachers in August 2001 using money raised from its first annual fundraising drive.
